She was born in New Delhi, India. Her parents tell her that she was a very shy, and a very quiet child with intuitive abilities. Her favorite relationship growing up has always been with her paternal grandfather. He taught her valuable lessons of life by sharing ancient historical stories from Bhagwat Geeta, Ramayana, and History of India. Her access to his huge library of books was her first door to experience the world without traveling. She loves nature, animals, outdoor activities, and traveling the world.
This 'Guru-Shishya' (Teacher-student) divine relationship with her Kathak Guru Dr. Jaswinder Kaur is one of her most beautiful relationships. She constantly stays in touch with her Guru to keep receiving her blessings and guidance.
Soon after she completed her Bachelors (Visharad) in Kathak, the Head of the Gandharva-Mahavidyalaya, India approached her and offered her with the Kathak teacher position. That was the beginning of her Kathak teaching career as she felt very honored and accepted the position while working on her Masters in Kathak.
Her current focus is to impact her students in a meaningful way. She aims to ignite the flame of her students' hidden potential that they hold but are currently aware of. She consistently makes efforts to empower her students so they believe in their abilities to accomplish anything they desire to.
She started learning Kathak at an early age from her very dear and respected Guru, Dr. Jaswinder Kaur, a Gold Medalist in Masters Indian Classical Dance, Punjab University, currently serving the community as The Principal of MBG Government College Pojewal, Punjab University. She started learning Kathak at an early age from her very dear and respected Guru, Dr. Jaswinder Kaur, a Gold Medalist in Masters Indian Classical Dance, Punjab University, currently serving the community as The Principal of MBG Government College Pojewal, Punjab University. Ms. Shaal followed her Guru’s footsteps and successfully completed 7+ years of extensive Kathak Training in a very structured and disciplined environment under her Guru’s wings.
Ms. Shaal's talent started receiving recognition early in her life due to her stage performances. She started accepting only quality offers from a world full of modeling, beauty pageants’, drama and dance competitions opportunities. Her first Cinematic offer came from the Punjab film Industry, and this is how her acting career took off. She went on to winning many awards as a Best Actor, Beauty Queen, and Best Classical Kathak Dancer.
Soon she moved to Bombay (Now Mumbai) to work in a Hindi film where she also became an International event-organizer. She extensively traveled worldwide, and received the honor to work closely with some very well-known and well-renowned artists of the century in their own genre. She prefers to stay humble in sharing her experiences. But, due to the nature of ‘The Light of Dance Academy’ business, she has decided to share a few of her favorite artists’ names that she had the pleasure to work with. One of her all-time favorite actor Dharam Jee aka Dharmendra (Dharam Singh Deol), the winner of Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award along with countless other awards; Mithun Chakraborty, Indian film actor, singer, producer, writer, social worker, entrepreneur, television presenter and a former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament; Jatin Pandit-Lalit Pandit, Indian film industry Music Director Duo; Ganesh Acharya, an amazing dance choreographer; Raveena Tandon; Anupam Kher; Shakti Kapoor; Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet, Kumar Sanu, and Sunil Grover, a very well-known comedian.
Other than being a classical dancer, former model and an actor, Shaal also enjoys sketching, painting, writing, and gardening. In her words, she expresses herself best with different forms of art. Most times its dance, and other times its sketching or coming up with lyrics for a new gazal, song or a poem. In addition, she loves traveling new places, reading, raising pets; never a dull moment in her life, she is either learning something new or teaching someone with what she has already mastered.

A genuinely dedicated teacher, Ms. Shaal (Shalini Madra) takes the time to prepare for her classes in advance to conduct effective and valuable dance classes. Before training the practical aspect of a dance piece, she defines its purpose, origin, taal, laya (speed), and mood. She also explains dance-boles (lyrics) with notations on hand to teach students how each dance piece needs to be structured. Further, she takes the time to teach the techniques carefully designed by her that benefits her students in classes of all levels. First, she teaches foot-work, second, body movements, and third, expressions; and then syncing all three steps together to communicate emotions within the dance piece's purpose. Brilliantly utilizing the stage space in all directions to engage viewers attention sitting in all directions and at all levels, is one of her specialty.
She encourages students to be curious and ask as many questions as they require to grasp the concept and technique right. She patiently answers questions to lead her students to reach their highest potential.
Her classes are disciplined yet fun with a dash of humor flowing constantly to keep classes enjoyable. Yoga and meditation are also part of her classes to teach students value of flexibility, focus, and clarity of mind. She herself is a longtime yoga and meditate expert. She emphasizes on using these resources available to all to keep experiencing a quality life with a mind full of clarity and organized thoughts. She also emphasizes on practicing brief pauses throughout the day to empower self to analyze situations at hand, or during life events with an optimistic mind-set to experience a quality life.
